COMMUNITY POSTERS

The Lou Stovall Workshop began making posters for activists, artists, and musicians in the orbit of Howard University in the early 1960s. These posters reflect the energy and values of the time and present a view into a pivotal moment in the history of Washington, D.C.

Stovall’s posters spanned the artistic, the musical and the political. The collection includes over 300 posters from 1965 to 1975. Activists include the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, SNCC, Amnesty International and others. Musicians include Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, among many others.

Stovall’s posters have been exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum. In summer 2022 they will be the subject of a new exhibition at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
