OF THE LAND

In the early 1970s, artist and master printmaker Lou Stovall began composing visions of a utopia accessible to all. Reflecting on D.C.’s tumultuous years of civil rights demonstrations and anti-war protests, Stovall expanded his practice centered on community printmaking and political art to undertake a new series of ruminative poetry and silkscreen prints, which he called “Of the Land.”

This series is the subject of a new publication by Georgetown University Press and on view in new exhibitions at the Kreeger Museum and the Georgia Museum of Art.For a limited time — to April 30 — the Lou Stovall Workshop is offering two impressions of each of the four prints on view at the Kreeger Museum for purchase.
All prints are signed and numbered. Sold and shipped unframed.

INFOThe Lou Stovall Workshop presents the work of artist and master printmaker, Lou Stovall, and his collaborations in the medium of silkscreen. The Workshop has a mission to continue the Stovall legacy with new projects, exhibitions, and publications related to printmaking and community arts.

In 1968 Lou Stovall founded Workshop, Inc. with his first studio in a fourth floor walk-up on the end of Washington’s Georgetown art district. The studio quickly became a center of activity, attracting dozens of artists and interested observers daily. The posters were commissioned, printed, bought, and collected, while the reputation of Stovall and his associates, such as artist and wife Di Bagley Stovall and artist and musician Lloyd McNeill spread throughout the city. In 1969, Stovall was invited by Walter Hopps, the director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, to expand his operation in a newly acquired extension of the museum at the location of the former Washington Gallery of Modern Art in Dupont Circle.

Star Maker is a science fiction novel by Olaf Stapledon, published in 1937. The book tackles philosophical themes such as the essence of life, of birth, decay and death, and the relationship between creation and creator.

A pervading theme is that of progressive unity within and between different civilizations. Some of the elements and themes briefly discussed prefigure later fiction concerning genetic engineering and alien life forms. Arthur C. Clarke considered Star Maker to be one of the finest works of science fiction ever written.

A single human narrator from England is transported out of his body via unexplained means. He realizes he is able to explore space and other planets.

After exploring a civilization on another planet in our galaxy at a level of development similar to our own that existed millions of years ago thousands of light years from Earth (the “Other Earth”) in some detail, his mind merges with that of one of its inhabitants, and as they travel together, they are joined by still more minds or group-minds.
